After completing a degree in mathematics, David Patrick won full scholarships to his undergraduate degree at Leeds College of Music and his post-graduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. On completing his formal studies, he moved to Philadelphia for 3 months to study privately. On his return, he took up his first professional post, as artist-in-residence in Northern Ireland, sponsored by the Northern Ireland Arts Council.
In 2005, he undertook a further period of intensive study in New York, sponsored by the Scottish Arts Council, studying with members of the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. This included lessons with Gary Dial, who is head of the improvisation department and responsible for writing the 6-year curriculum that the School follows, and Mark Soskin, who was pianist with Sonny Rollins for 15 years.

Education
David Patrick is passionately committed to jazz education. He currently teaches on the undergraduate course in jazz at Strathclyde University, conducts workshops for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, and is a guest tutor at the Glasgow and Edinburgh Jazz Summer Schools.
He also teaches privately. Former students have gone on to perform with George Benson(!), Troy Miller, Soweto Kinch, Amy Winehouse, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, Tommy Smiths Youth Jazz Orchestra, and members of the Scottish Chamber Ochestra.
Junior/elementary students have gone on to study at the Royal Academy of Music, London; Berklee School of Music, Boston and Leeds College of Music.
